Spinal conditions in dogs can be hard to diagnose. Spinal problems can be related to a number of causes and the symptoms can be overlapping. Treatment of spinal problems is often expensive and many treatments fail at first, especially if the problem has been misdiagnosed. Spinal conditions can be age-related, due to injury, or the result of congenital spinal defects.
Degenerative Myelopathy typically occurs in mature dogs. It usually shows itself with rear leg weakness. The weakness may be in both legs or one side may be affected more than the other. DM features difficulty moving rather than the inability to control movement. This is a progressive condition that starts in the rear legs and moves forward, finally reaching the brain stem. There is usually no pain. Bladder and bowel function usually remain intact. The dog may drag his feet. DM is a genetic disease.
Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD) is a degenerative disease which may have a genetic-related predisposition to premature degeneration of the spinal elements which can lead to damage and injury. The spinal disk becomes less flexible and sooner or later breaks down. This compresses and inflames the spinal cord and its membranes and nerve roots.
Wobblers Syndrome can occur in multiple forms but all of them feature a misalignment of the cervical vertebrae (the neck vertebrae). The symptoms include an unsteady or wobbly gait. The two typical clinical forms of Wobblers are found in middle-aged to elderly dogs and in very young dogs. Dobermans are inclined to get the form for older dogs; Great Danes are likely to get the form for juveniles.
Lumbosacral Disease describes disk problems with the lumbosacral space along the spine. It can include misalignment or disk degeneration.
Spondylosis Deformans usually occurs in middle-aged or elderly dogs. It is usually an age-related degenerative condition that features vertebral instability and damage. It may be painful and cause problems in mobility.
Neoplasia refers to tumors that can develop anywhere along the spine. Depending on their size and position the tumors can have different affects on a dog. Some of them can be very serious. Osteosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, chondrosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma are the most common.
If your dog has trouble walking, exhibits pain when he walks, when shifting position, trying to rise or lie down, or seems to have limited mobility, it's a good idea to see your veterinarian. He may be able to diagnose a spinal problem before it becomes worse. Many therapies can help your dog and there are some holistic treatments that have proven successful. Acupuncture is said to help some dogs while joint supplements have helped other dogs. Some people have tried Chinese herbs with success. One of the biggest challenges one has to face when traveling or migrating into the Philippines is importing their pets. The good thing about importing pets into the Philippines is that the country and its system love pets. The process is relatively easy and the documentary requirements are easy to procure. One just needs to know what documents are these and what agency of the Philippine government processes all of these. Here is a general guideline on how to import pets, particularly cats and dogs, into the Philippines.
Step 1: Secure a Health Certificate
One of the most important documentary requirements for importing pets into the Philippines is a health certificate. A health certificate is important because this attests or certifies that the cat or dog to be imported is healthy and is free of any disease. When getting a health certificate makes sure that the veterinarian that issues it is a duly licensed local veterinarian. It would be preferable if the veterinarian has experience in previously issuing a health certificate; however, professional experience is not a mandatory requirement, as long as the veterinary is duly licensed and has a clinic operating within the country of origin.
Step 2: Have the Health Certificate Certified
The health certificate procured by the importer must be certified. The certification is necessary because a stamp of certification proves that the health certificate is valid for all intents and purposes and that the clinic or veterinary that issues it has authority to issue it; in short it is a truthful document that proclaims all the health details needed to show that the cats and dogs to be imported is safe, healthy, and does not have any diseases. There are two (2) certification process needed to make the health certificate procured from the veterinarian is valid. First, is the certification made by the relevant foreign affairs office of the country of origin; next step is the certification to be made by the Philippine Consular Office in the country of origin. Bear in mind that the health certificate is generally effective only for thirty (30) days reckoned from the date when the vet issued it. The importer needs to complete all the needed certification before the thirty (30) days validity of the health certificate expires. Also, make note of the fact that there are certain charges for these types of certification; know beforehand how much is needed to be paid before getting the certifications.
Step 3: Secure an Import Permit
After getting the required certified health certificate for your cats or dogs it is now time to get the needed import permit from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) located in the Philippines. The BAI is the governmental authority who can only issue the import permit needed to allow the entry of imported pets. When getting a permit, go to the Animal Health Division (AHD) of the BAI which is the department that administers the issuance of the import permit. Procuring an import permit also requires payment of certain fees. The applicant also needs to show a copy of the certified health permit. The importer may call the BAI directly to know the needed documentary requirements and fees to be paid needed to facilitate the processing and procurement of the needed import permit.
One of the questions asked about the procurement of import permit is that can it be applied by any person other than the importer, and the answer to this question is yes. An authorization letter is also needed to state that the applicant is the authorized representative of the importer. After the application process is completed, it will take several business days to know whether or not the import permit application has been rejected or approved.
Step 4: Presentation of Documents
The original certified health certificate and the import permit must be shown upon arrival of the pets into the airport in the Philippines. The airport authorities will then inspect if these documents are valid or not.

Septic Arthritis (in other terms as Bacterial Arthritis or Infectious Arthritis) is an infection in the fluid and tissues of joint cavity most commonly caused by bacteria. It is considered a dangerous form of acute arthritis in dogs because just like other bacterial infections, the bacterial can get into dog's bloodstream and carry an infecting organism into other parts of the body. Bacteria can cause infectious joint disease by tick-borne diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and by fungal infection. On Septic Arthritis, the primary bacterial sources, based on clinical search and studies, were associated with abscesses, bite wounds, enteritis, dermatitis, cystitis and/or endometritis after birth.
Septic arthritis normally only affects a single joint and the condition results in swelling, fever, heat, and pain in the joint. With septic arthritis, the dog is likely to stop eating and become depressed. Risk factors for septic arthritis are joint problems, rheumatoid arthritis, high infection risk, and a weak immune system. Septic arthritis is commonly spread hematogenously with predisposing factors being intravenous drug usage, in-dwelling catheters present as well as underlying immuno-compromised states. Bacteria are carried by the bloodstream from an infectious focus or are introduced by a skin lesion that penetrates the joint. Septic Arthritis most commonly occurred after surgeries of the stifle joints of dogs. The joint cavity is usually a sterile space, with synovial fluid and cellular matter including a few white blood cells. Some diagnosis was based on clinical signs, joint fluid analysis, radiography, microbiology and/or response to treatment. Chronic lameness was the most common problem at presentation. Analysis of joint fluid invariably revealed large number of nucleated cells, which consisted primarily of neutrophils. Bacterial septic arthritis may often be mild and manifest as chronic lameness. Analysis of joint fluid will detect an inflammatory arthropathy but the presence of toxic neutrophils should not be relied on as an indicator of sepsis. Culture of infected joint fluid is likely to be successful if antimicrobials are not given prior to collection and if the sample is inoculated into enrichment broth. Treatment should involve antimicrobial drugs, open-joint lavage and removal of joint prostheses if the infection is associated with previous surgery.
Septic arthritis might be difficult to diagnose due to nonspecific clinical signs and radiological findings in early stage of the disease. An early diagnosis is important for achieving favorable prognosis. Diagnosis of septic arthritis was confirmed by physical and orthopaedic examinations, evaluation of radiographs and synovial fluid analysis including leukocyte and neutrophil counts, cytological examination and bacterial culture. Bacteria is one of the most common causes of infective arthritis in dogs. However, bacterial arthritis in dogs can resemble many other arthropathies and attempts to achieve a definitive diagnosis by culture of the offending organism are not always successful.
The treatment of Septic Arthritis involves determining the type of microorganism involved and its antibiotic sensitivity. Antibiotics are usually administered for a minimum of a month and analgesics (pain relief medications) are necessary to combat pain and inflammation. Other major treatment involves antimicrobial drugs, while there many other cases the dog received antimicrobial drugs and with combination of surgical procedures such as joint lavage and sometimes removable of non-absorbent suture material, arthrodesis and amputation. The surgical treatment for septic arthritis (infectious arthritis) includes removal of joint fluid. To examine white blood cells and bacteria blood tests are performed.
We're now going to look at how you get your
horse to move up a transition from canter to gallop. Now, gallop is something that should
not be done by novice riders, and can be incredibly dangerous if not done in a controlled way.
If you are in any way unsure about your canter, you should not move up into a gallop. Galloping should also never be done in an
arena. A horse needs a lot of room to get up to speed, but he also needs a lot of room
to slow down.
So, it should be done, maybe on a slight hill or in a field. First of all, you ask the horse to canter.
Then, when you're in the canter position, you need to come off the horse's back to enable
him to move faster. Jennifer is now going to show us a light seat, or a jumping position,
that is necessary for the horse to go forward into a gallop. From this position, she is holding her own
weight off the back of the horse, her arms are in a position where she can move them
forwards and backwards with the horse's head's movements, because in the gallop, he needs
to stretch his head and neck forwards.
In this position she is perfectly in balance.
She's shortened up the reigns so she still in control. If in an emergency, she needs to slow down,
she then can use her body weight to sit back down on the horse and ask him to slow down.
Galloping, as I've already said, is not recommended for novices. It's not something that should
be done often, as it puts a lot of stress and strain on a horse's legs. Galloping should only be done on sensible
horses in a place where you know that you can be in control.
Another good tip is never
to gallop towards home. This can teach a horse bad manners, and if you do become out of control,
they will take you home all on their own. Jennifer is now showing us, in the canter,
the position you need to be in when galloping a horse. As we are in the arena, we are not
going to ask Chester to go any faster, as this would become unsafe and he may damage
himself.
So Jennifer is just showing us the light seat, two point, or jumping position
needed to encourage a horse to go faster in the gallop. As you can see, she is still keeping the reign
contact. She is looking up and keeping her body posture. She is perfectly in balance
with the horse, and she is not impeding his natural balance, so Chester is free to move
forward.
If she wanted to make him to go any faster,
she is in the perfect position to do so. ..
Many people who are shopping for a small dog do not want a dog that is a purse dog, or a dog that is carried around a pampered. Perhaps you are seeking a small dog because you have a small home, yet you want a dog with some spunk. If you are looking for a little dog with a big attitude, then a Miniature Pinscher might be the right kind of dog for you. As with any breed, however, you should know something about these dogs before you purchase one. No matter how cute they are, Miniature Pinschers are not for everyone! too many horses for a specific range, they'll gather them and they'll get them to a facility
to find homes for.
I basically call this my morning therapy. The best trainers have no training experience. Because some guys with horse experience aren't
teachable. So the inmates now in the program, the majority had zero horse experience, some
had zero animal experience.
There wasn't many cowboys where I grew up. That would have been hard to fathom. But here
I am. I never even had a puppy.
I've seen goldfish
and people having fishes and people taking on pets, it just was never my thing. When we first got him, we couldn't get near
him. Do you trust me with your foot this morning? Huh? Good boy. Here it is a year-plus later and I really
couldn't imagine life without horses.
Any. Somehow in some form in some fashion. Somebody's gonna fall in love with her.
My baby.
They come out of the wild with certain behaviors
that were key to their survival. These inmates, a lot of them come in with certain things
that they have picked up, right or wrong, that they felt they needed to survive or function. They're going from, from wild, if you will,
to gentle. There you go, good.
Some of the guys that are in for the, what we would consider the more serious crimes,
the more violent crimes, I think they have more to relate to. When these horses first come in, their problem
is trust. When I first come into prison, that was my problem. Eighteen years ago it probably
wouldn't have worked because my attitude wasn't right.
I had a a a, for lack of better words, a street
mentality. I don't think I'd have had the patience. He just bein' ornery this morning. He has
his days.
Now this is what you get now, now I'm just goin' stand here. He gets it. What I learn from my horses is patience, love
and caring. And trust.
Humans hold a grudge. Horses don't hold a
grudge. The inmate's not just in there saying I'm
going to teach this horse how to change, but the inmate needs to understand, I need to
learn from the horse on how to change him. You know when I got locked up, it's like,
you know, because I believe in God, and I.
Asked him, I said, God, you know, give me
the silver lining in this whole thing so I can accept this and be OK with it. And this
is the silver lining in my sentence is this job. You're not breaking the horse, you're softening
the horse. We're not just throwing on cowboy boots and
a cowboy hat and bucking them out.
We'll start a horse just going in a circle.
And that horse is going to have a natural tendency to run. And starting to get that
horse to turn inside, every time the horse turns inside or does what we want, my emphasis
is that we take all the pressure off. Sometimes it comes along quicker. I've had
them within ...
I've had them within 15 minutes walk from one of the ... Well, no, let me rephrase
that. One time in my life I've had them, 15 minutes, this horse went from one side of the pen to the other. And came and put his nose my chest.
The method of training is referred to primarily
as horse whispering. Good for you. Good boy. I think the reason we say that is because
the trainers are whispering.
(Singing) And why should my heart ... (Off camera) The trainers are speaking softly
but it's to keep us soft as well as have that gentle approach. You like that one, huh? (Off camera) It almost sounds like you're
doing something a little mystical. You're whispering something.
Good for you, good boy. (Off camera) And in reality you're just trying
to keep that horse calm. What we really are doing is finding a way to say yes to the horse. Never had one bite me.
Had 'em nip at my shirt.
They're just trying to figure me out. And I've had 'em pull my hat off so I don't want
them to pull my nice hat off. And after awhile the horse figures out, oh,
every time the pressure goes away, I must have done something right. He can be in there for five, 10 minutes, and
that horse is squaring up with him.
Walking up, smelling his hand. The old way of training horses pretty much
was pressure, pressure, pressure, pressure. You get a saddle, bridle on a horse, you get
on and the horse typically is going to either run or explode, especially the wild horses.
And it was all corrective. This is all progressive.
Bottom line is you're not going to force a
horse to do anything you don't want to do, the way we train out here. And once you learn how to recognize the body
language of a horse, they talk to you and basically in so many body language words that
tell you, hey, you know, you're pushing me too far, slow down. You know, I'm trying to
figure out what you're asking. It's a spiritual connection because you're
pretty much listening to them but you have to listen not with your ears because they
don't say anything.
You kind of listen with your heart. Oh now you want a kiss? No, I don't kiss.
I don't like kisses. Wild horses just in general there's a certain
romantic attachment we have. And I think rightly so.
They are very much symbols of the American
West. Mustangs, for one thing, they're just, they're
amazing animals that have learned to survive in the wild. They have real diverse genetics.
There are some of them in the northern areas that came in with the wagon trains. The Native Americans had horses, some of those
had a Spanish genetics or Spanish lineage.
You had the cavalry come in with horses that
had Morgan influence. You had ranchers that come in, their horses
got away or they turned them loose. So over a period of time, just survival of the fittest,
you have this strong genetic strain that begins to emerge where they have strong bones, strong
hooves. This the cream of the crop right here.
You
see their attitude before and then you see their attitude in about a couple months. It's
a lot different. (Slightly off camera) Guys, be picking names
out of that list. Don't be coming up with these innovative names that nobody knows what
they mean.
(Group laughing) And once I know what they
mean, I don't want to know. So none of those names. Nice horse names. Nice horse names.
I've had inmates come up and say, I never
had on the outside, I never had success and saw something through to fulfillment. I always
took shortcuts. It really is a big success when they are able
to see this horse come in, nobody's touched it as far as the horse willingly allowing
somebody to touch it. And to have that horse responding and then
progressing on up to saddle training where they're riding it through obstacles and, uh,
it is really amazing to see.
Any time you came in the pen, she would keep
that head away from you and swing her behind to you. But with a little love and care and understanding,
not forcing her, letting her take her time, letting her figure it out, letting her understand
that I'm not trying to hurt her. Now I can take this and slip it right on in.
She has no problem with it. I'm pretty good at it.
I've actually found
something I'm pretty decent at. I can make a living doing this. I have no other trade,
you know, and I could actually get out of here and make a living training horses. If I had to choose between these inmates leaving
here with a great career or great character, I would choose character in a heartbeat.
It's a sense of accomplishment. And for some
people, they might look at it is, you know, it's small and insignificant. But for somebody who let's say didn't believe
in himself, to actually get that type of response from an animal. I don't know, it does something
to you.
It validates the hard work that you put in. Not just in training the horse but the hard
work you put in itself. Getting to this point. I'm not a kid.
I'm 40 ... I'll be 46 years
old this year. And to finally say, OK, you have something
to stand on, you're not as worthless as you believed you are. For me, that's, that's an
accomplishment.
Yeah, it's huge, it's big. You know, and I
don't take it lightly. They all come in with baggage and it doesn't
excuse what they did. But you get insight into maybe why they, why
they did those things.
And what happens over a period of time is,
they begin to understand they don't have to go back out and live that way. And I've learned through working with horses
how to step back. On the streets I didn't know how to step back. I didn't know how to stop and say, OK, enough's enough, I'm gonna leave and I'm gonna think about what's going
on, you know, and why my anger's getting the best of me.
And that's really the key, regardless of why
they're here, I want them to understand that they can live a different way when they get out. And I don't have a rehabilitation manual or
a rehabilitation plan, it is just a part of the whole process. And I want these guys to think about what
they're going to do when they get out. We let these horses prove themselves, why
can't we let the inmates prove themselves as well? We all need each other.
Hmmm? Yeah. And we need
them too, huh? I need you too. Or else you wouldn't be here. Right?.
